About this calculator

This tile calculator estimates how many tiles you need for a floor or wall from area, tile size, and waste.

Formula notes

tiles = ceil(area × (1 + waste%) / tile area). Tile area = tile length × tile width.

Worked examples

  1. Example: 10 m² with 40×40 cm tiles (0.16 m² each) and 10% waste needs ceil(11/0.16) = 69 tiles.
  2. A 12 m2 surface using 300 mm x 600 mm tiles needs 66.67 tiles theoretically; with 10% waste, round up to at least 74 tiles.

Frequently asked questions

Do grout lines change the count?

Only slightly; 2–3 mm grout lines reduce needed tiles by about 1–2%.

How much waste for small tiles?

Small tiles cut less waste per piece — 7% is often enough versus 10% for large tiles.

Limits and interpretation

  • The geometric count omits grout-joint layout, edge cuts, pattern repeats, niches, and unusable partial tiles.
  • Order by complete boxes and verify shade/calibre batch information; the calculated tile count is not the purchase unit.
