Formula notes

ρ = m / V, so m = ρ·V and V = m / ρ. Water is about 1000 kg/m³ = 1 g/cm³.

Worked examples

  1. Example: 1 kg occupying 1 m³ has density 1 kg/m³ = 0.001 g/cm³, as the defaults show.
  2. A sample with mass 540 g and volume 200 cm3 has density 2.70 g/cm3, numerically matching 2700 kg/m3 after unit conversion.

Why does ice float on water?

Ice is about 917 kg/m³, less dense than liquid water at 1000 kg/m³.

How do kg/m³ and g/cm³ convert?

1 g/cm³ = 1000 kg/m³, so multiply or divide by 1000.

Limits and interpretation

  • Density can depend on temperature, pressure, composition, porosity, and whether bulk or true material volume is measured.
  • Mass and volume must describe the same sample and state; displaced, trapped, or absorbed fluid can bias the volume.
