Formula notes

P = Vrms^2 / Z; dBm = 10 log10(P / 1 mW); dBuV = 20 log10(Vrms / 1 uV); Vpeak = Vrms x sqrt(2).

Worked examples

  1. Example: 0 dBm into 50 ohm is 1 mW, about 223.61 mV RMS and 447.21 mV peak.
  2. A 1 V RMS signal across 50 ohm delivers 20 mW, equal to 13.01 dBm and 120 dBuV.

Frequently asked questions

What reference levels are used?

dBm uses 1 mW and dBuV uses 1 uV; both follow the standard RF definitions.

Why is impedance required for a voltage input?

The tool also reports power, current, and logarithmic levels, so the load impedance is needed for a consistent set of results.

Limits and interpretation

  • The equations assume a purely resistive load and sinusoidal RMS relationships; reactive loads, waveform shape, and mismatch affect real RF measurements.
  • dBm and dBuV are absolute references (1 mW and 1 uV); they are not cable loss, antenna gain, or EIRP calculators.
