Formula notes
GPA = total grade points / total credits, where grade points = course credit hours x grade point value.
Worked examples
- Example: an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course and a B (3.0) in another 3-credit course gives a GPA of 3.5.
- A=4.0 in 3 credits and B+=3.3 in 4 credits gives GPA = (12 + 13.2) / 7 = 3.6.

Frequently asked questions
What grade point scale does this use?
The tool uses the common 4.0 scale with A=4.0, A-=3.7, B+=3.3, B=3.0 and so on; check your institution if it uses plus/minus differently.
Do pass/fail courses count?
The letter-grade scale does not include P/F. Grade only courses that carry A-F letter grades and credit hours.
Limits and interpretation
- Grade point values follow a common 4.0 scale; your school may use a different plus/minus or weighted scale.
- The calculator treats all entered courses equally and does not know which courses are repeated, dropped, or weighted honors.
