About this calculator

This time calculator adds or subtracts hours and minutes, and converts between clock time and decimal hours.

Formula notes

decimal hours = hours + minutes/60; total minutes = hours × 60 + minutes.

Worked examples

  1. Example: 7 h 30 min is 7.5 decimal hours = 450 minutes.
  2. A shift from 22:30 to 06:30 crosses midnight and lasts 8 hours; subtracting a 30-minute break gives 7 hours 30 minutes net.

How to use it

  1. Enter the hours and minutes.
  2. Read decimal hours and total minutes.
  3. Use it for timesheets, billing, or scheduling.

Frequently asked questions

Why do timesheets use decimal hours?

Payroll systems multiply rate × hours directly, which needs decimals like 7.5 rather than 7:30.

How do I convert 0.75 hours back?

0.75 × 60 = 45 minutes, so it is 0 h 45 min.

Limits and interpretation

  • The page assumes the intended midnight wrap and does not know the calendar date or daylight-saving transition.
  • Break duration is subtracted as one total and does not validate labour-law timing or paid-break rules.
