8-Hour Shift Calculator

Calculate an eight-hour shift end time from the start time and break duration.

Calculator

About this calculator

This 8-hour shift calculator finds the end time of a work shift from its start time, scheduled duration, and break time.

Formula notes

End time = start time + shift duration + unpaid break duration, with the result wrapped across midnight when needed.

Worked examples

  1. Example: an 08:00 shift lasting 8 hours with a 1-hour break ends at 17:00.
  2. A shift starting at 07:30 with 8 hours of work and a 30-minute break ends at 16:00.

How to use it

  1. Enter the shift start time.
  2. Set the shift duration and total break duration.
  3. Read the resulting end time, including overnight shifts.

Frequently asked questions

Can the shift cross midnight?

Yes. The calculator wraps the result into the next day when the total duration passes midnight.

Is the break included in the eight hours?

The break is added separately, so enter only the paid or scheduled shift duration in the duration field.

Limits and interpretation

  • The calculation assumes the entered break is added to the shift and does not model split shifts, rounding rules, or local labor law.
  • An overnight result is a clock-time calculation; it does not determine whether a schedule complies with an employer's policy.
