This cricket bowling-average calculator divides the total runs a bowler conceded by the wickets credited to that bowler.

Formula notes

bowling average = runs conceded / wickets taken. Wickets not credited to the bowler must be excluded from the denominator.

Worked examples

  1. Example: conceding 287 runs while taking 14 wickets gives a bowling average of 20.5 runs per wicket.
  2. A cricket bowler who concedes 420 runs and takes 21 credited wickets has a bowling average of exactly 20 runs per wicket.

Frequently asked questions

Is a lower bowling average better?

Generally yes, because it means fewer runs were conceded for each wicket, though context and sample size still matter.

Can I calculate an average with zero wickets?

No. Division by zero is undefined, so at least 1 credited wicket is required.

Limits and interpretation

  • Use official runs conceded and wickets credited to the bowler; team wickets such as run outs are governed by scoring rules and may not belong in the denominator.
  • The average does not adjust for overs, economy rate, strike rate, opponents, pitch, match format, era, or sample size and should not be used alone to rank players.
