Formula notes

Box V = lwh; cylinder V = πr²h; cone V = ⅓πr²h; sphere V = (4/3)πr³. Surface-area formulas vary by shape.

  2. A cylinder with radius 3 cm and height 10 cm has volume pi x 3^2 x 10, or about 282.743 cm3.

Frequently asked questions

Are the units the same for volume and surface area?

No. Volume uses cubic units (like cm³); surface area uses square units (cm²).

How do I measure a cone's height?

Use the perpendicular height from base center to tip, not the slant height.

Limits and interpretation

  • The formulas assume ideal solids with the selected dimensions; wall thickness, hollow regions, bevels, and irregular geometry are excluded.
  • Every linear input must use one unit, and the output is cubic rather than a liquid-capacity unit until converted.
