About this calculator

This cooling calculator estimates water cooling by waiting, mixing with cold water, or pouring between containers using captured physical models.

Formula notes

Mixing uses volume x (T_initial - T_desired) / (T_initial - T_cold) for the cold fraction; waiting and pouring use -ln((T_desired - T_ambient) / (T_initial - T_ambient)) with the area or pouring model.

Worked examples

  1. Example: mixing 100 deg C water with 15 deg C water to reach 60 deg C gives a 50% hot and 50% cold split.
  2. Mixing 100 deg C and 15 deg C water to 60 deg C splits the final volume 50% hot and 50% cold.

How to use it

  1. Choose a cooling method: waiting, mixing, or pouring.
  2. Enter the initial and desired temperatures.
  3. Provide the method-specific details and read the cooling time or water volumes.

Frequently asked questions

What methods are supported?

Wait for cooling, mix with cold water, or pour between containers.

Which temperature units are accepted?

Degrees C, F, and K are all supported.

Limits and interpretation

  • The waiting and pouring models use captured reference constants and assume uniform temperature and still air.
  • Evaporation, container material, and varying ambient conditions are not modeled.
