Formula notes
Final price = original x (1 - discount%), and savings = original - final price.
Worked examples
- Example: a 200 item at 15% off costs 170 and saves 30.
- A jacket marked $160 with a 25% discount costs $120 before tax; an additional 10% discount lowers it to $108, not $104, because discounts apply sequentially.
How to use it
- Enter the original price and discount percent.
- Review the final price and savings.
- Compare multiple discounts before buying.
Frequently asked questions
Does tax change the math?
If tax is added after the discount, apply tax to the discounted price rather than the original price.
Is 20% off followed by 20% off equal to 40% off?
No. The second discount applies to 80% of the original price, leaving 64%, which is a total discount of 36%.
Limits and interpretation
- Sales tax, shipping, service charges, coupons, minimum spend, and excluded items can change the checkout total.
- Successive percentage discounts add multiplicatively; their rates should not normally be added together.
